We want to extend our thanks to you for your interest in our upcoming event. Our June 9th event is solely designed to distribute bicycle helmets to the children in our Capital Region community. This program will provide not only awareness of the importance of always wearing a bicycle helmet, but will also provide a helmet for the children to use when bicycling. An additional benefit is that the children will also carry the message home to their families.
As you may already know, in New York State injuries are the leading cause of hospitalization for children ages 10 to 14 and the leading cause of death for individuals ages 5 to 24. Traffic-related injuries account for a significant percentage of those injuries. In the Greater Capital District Region, 420 pedestrians and 263 bicyclists were killed or injured in traffic crashes in 2000. Of those incidents 26% of the pedestrians and 50% of the bicyclists were 14 years old or under.
As parents, family members & care-givers, we all strive to protect our children from any injury but more so with injuries, that lead to serious head injuries. A head injury can play a detrimental role in the development of a child’s ability to function and reason as an adult.
To raise awareness of how to minimize bicycle related head injuries, The New York State Association of Traffic Safety Boards is sponsoring an awareness program called BRAIN2 project Bike Riders Avoiding Injuries 2 Noggins. BRAIN2 (BRAIN SQUARED) is a creative approach to bring the bicycle helmet safety message to children. Volunteer riders will travel a sixty mile planned course and visit schools in each community that the ride goes to. At each school stop, in cooperation with the school, the volunteer riders will engage the children in a brief program about helmet safety and provide the children with a new helmet. We feel that this is a very powerful way to deliver an important safety message and have some fun in the process. The ride will visit second graders in four different school districts Including Okte Elementary in Saratoga County, Altamont Elementary in Albany County, Pashley Elementary in Glenville and Jefferson Elementary In Rotterdam.
As this is a true community event we are asking for your support in this endeavor. You can support the BRAIN 2 project by riding in the event, being a ride support volunteer or sponsoring a rider. The donation to be or sponsor a rider is a minimum fundraising commitment of two hundred and seventy five dollars, which is needed by May 1st. These funds will cover the costs to provide all children participating with a helmet, educational activity book and related materials. The cost to purchase a single helmet is $9. Please let me know of your intention to participate by April 15, 2010 so that we can move forward with our plans.
In closing, we would like to inform you that we are a not-for-profit 501-3 c, charitable organization. (ID# 20-76-44 and Federal ID# 11-3513108)
Thank you once again for this opportunity and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
